Dolch Word List, Puzzles, Flash Cards, and Worksheets
The Dolch word lists are such an effective way to teach children to read English that
they’ve been in wide use ever since they were first complied by Dr. Edward William
Dolch in 1936. Dolch examined all the most popular children’s books of that time and
organized his findings into two lists: nouns and service words.
The 95 words in the nouns list are the most commonly used nouns in the English
language. It is recommended that all children learning to read in the English language
should have them mastered by the end of first grade.
The service words in the Dolch word list contains 220 common words that children learn
to use with nouns to form complete sentences. Many of them are ‘sight words,’ or
words that must be learned by sight instead of by using phonics to work through the
sound of the individual letters.
